Comments: This course examines how law and public policy influence -- and are influenced by -- gender. It comprises analytical approaches to gender and the law, including formal and substantive equality. Topics include sex discrimination in the workplace and educational institutions, the expression of religious freedom, and bodily autonomy. For the most part, we focus on constitutional law. We use an intersectional approach with attention to racism and the legacy of slavery and a nuanced understanding of gender and sexual identity. This course is about law, but it is not a law class. Instead, it introduces how laws are made and the impact of women and gender equity. We explore state and federal law-making, focusing on constitutional law, and incorporate common law as appropriate. Increasingly, politics drive the decisions of the Supreme Court and federal District Courts; thus, political analysis has become a significant part of the course. Prerequisites Students are expected to possess graduate-level research and writing skills, but are not expected to have any prior knowledge of the law.
