About the Department

The Graduate Program in Art Therapy at The George Washington University is dedicated to providing those who would become art therapists with education that will foster adherence to the highest standards of professionalism in the clinical practice of art therapy. In accordance with The George Washington University and The American Art Therapy Association, the Art Therapy Program emphasizes the integration of theoretical principles and practical experience. To this end, opportunities to explore the connection between the creative and the therapeutic processes are available in each class, as well as in the weekly, on-campus supervisory sessions. Research is encouraged to enhance student learning and to expand the field's knowledge base. The Program is committed to a multicultural approach. The Art Therapy Program advocates the adoption of a life-long approach to the learning process by encouraging graduates' participation in continuing education, supervision, creative expression, and self-understanding.
